A few years ago, I was attending a powerful church where we discussed unconventional people people living unconventional lives. Notably, the church spiritually housed many of these people holding both intellectual and spiritual space for them. This matters more to me than any kind of “message” delivered on this topic sermon-wise. It creates and sustains the people who attend were/ are pursuing lives on their own terms. While back in the US in December and January, I reconnected with a group of these friends. The ministers recommended reading Chris Guillebeau, who I believe is a powerful force on the topic of unconventional lives.
In Chris´ book The Art of the Unconventional Life, he writes:
…you must be open to new ideas. This does not mean you accept new ideas blindly-but rather you carefully consider something before dismissing it…Almost everyone says they are open-minded, but when it comes down to it, most of us are deeply uncomfortable with change.
This is always a good and exceptionally challenging reminder. I am writing it here to remember it again.
