At an exhibit like Testimony: African American Artists Collective there is shared joy, shared grief, and shared resilience presented by black artists. I found myself wanting to sneak into each piece until each of those converations brought about my own grief in talking about slavery, violence, what happened and still happens. It´s hard to look at something like that.

I think managing a history of pain is a big part of how we could move forward together on this topic. It’s something we have in common. It´s something we need to include in our civil conversations. We invite each other to the table, listening.

Pain isn´t just personal. It’s also shared by people who care.

En una exposición como Testimonio: Colectivo de Artistas Afroamericanos hay alegría compartida, dolor compartido y resiliencia compartida presentada por artistas negros. Me encontré con ganas de colarme en cada pieza hasta que cada una de esas convergencias me hizo sentir mi propio dolor al hablar de la esclavitud, de la violencia, de lo que ocurrió y sigue ocurriendo. Es difícil mirar algo así.

Creo que manejar una historia de dolor es una gran parte de cómo podríamos avanzar juntos en este tema. Es algo que tenemos en común. Es algo que debemos incluir en nuestras conversaciones civiles. Invitamos a los demás a sentarse a la mesa, a escuchar.

El dolor no es sólo personal. También es compartido por la gente que se preocupa.
