I was talking to some younger friends this past week about formal education and learning.

As the words escaped my mouth, it occurred to me. The people I respect the most are the adults who have figured out their own maps of adult learning.

Sure, they might have a Master’s Degree but that was years ago.

Or maybe they have very little formal education at all. I am amazed at how little that matters in life. Whatever their background is, they didn’t assume that their formal education was some final posture in their stance of being informed. It’s the people who have it as a habit. It’s a more generative and generous stance on life.

They consistently do the main activity that guards against the ugliest sides of humanity…what happens when we blindly accept information or refuse a conversation.

It’s really worth repeating: How long does education last?

How long does learning last?

Which makes us feel more fully alive? What makes us more interesting?

La semana pasada hablaba con unos amigas más jóvenes sobre la educación formal y el aprendizaje.

Mientras las palabras escapaban de mi boca, se me ocurrió. Las personas a las que más respeto son los adultos que han descubierto sus propios mapas del aprendizaje de adultos.

Puede que tengan un máster, pero eso fue hace años.

O puede que tengan muy poca educación formal. Me sorprende lo poco que eso importa en la vida. Sea cual sea su formación, no suponen que su educación formal sea una postura final en su postura de estar informados. Es la gente que lo tiene como un hábito. Es una postura más generativa y generosa ante la vida.

Hacen sistemáticamente la actividad principal que protege contra los lados más feos de la humanidad... lo que ocurre cuando aceptamos ciegamente la información o rechazamos una conversación.

Realmente vale la pena repetirlo: ¿Cuánto dura la educación?

¿Cuánto dura el aprendizaje?

¿Qué nos hace sentir más plenamente vivos? ¿Qué nos hace más interesantes?
