So... a post on my current goings-on. I'm living in Lima, Perú, and I've been here for nearly a month. I'm volunteering full time at Socios en Salud (Partners in Health) in the Carabayllo District of Lima. It's the first time I've done public health internationally, a mammoth step to redirect my career from domestic health to international health. I'm living in 2 places right now. First, in the Carabayllo District where Socios en Salud is housed. Second, in the Barranco neighborhood of Central Lima. It's artsy and way more touristy.
This photo from our Barranco apartment shows some of its beautiful stained glass. It loos like an old art museum/haunted house on the first floor. I don't have photos from Carabayllo yet, but I will soon.
Morné (my dear friend and Barranco roommate) and I at the beach. It takes us about 15 minutes to walk to the beach from our apartment.
This is the majority of the food I am consuming-- tamales. Wonderful and filling. They cost 1 Peruvian Sol (not much more than 30 cents).
The work I'm doing at Socios is a Maternal-Infant health intervention for women living in the Carabayllo District (one of the poorest in Lima) and eventually their children. The intervention focuses on nutrition, emotional health, and physical health using community health workers. I could (and wouldn't mind) talking about this forever, and I will share much more. I am also teaching 6 English classes a week at Socios. Using both my professions (public health and English teaching) at the same time while still learning Spanish. Not suprisingly, I am sleeping a lot right now when not working.
I'm share much more on the experience in Carabayllo soon. Time for bed.
