I am going to offer 2 scenarios which illustrate a critical element of public health interventions.
Someone walks into my life and tells me what to do. ”Anna, you need to drink more water. We are going to create a plan to get you to drink more water. I think…I might be interested. I might be onboard. I might be completely disinterested or annoyed or offended. I might ignore suggestion. This person creates a plan for me to drink more water. I might do it, I might ignore it. Maybe you never cared and nothing changes. I think that is very likely.
I realize I need to drink more water. I am tired of my old habit of feeling dehydrated. I know it is important. Someone new walks in and says to me, “I want to support you in being healthier, how can I help?” I say, “Yes. Help me drink more water.” Then I strategize with that person who has prior knowledge about how to get people to drink more water. They support me until it is time for me to make the habit my own. I have to remember to filter it so it tastes better and use a straw.
Understanding very clearly that humans have a hard time with change, which of these two models seems more possible to actually work with drinking more water?
Public health interventions can be designed the same way. Personally, I am often annoyed or sometimes angry when people give me unsolicited advice, even if it is with good intentions. Let me come up with it. Support me.
