I was recently struck by Helen Mirren´s 2017 Commencement Speech at Tulane University. I recommend watching it. She gave some well lived advice. Here are the 5 points she highlighted:
Don´t be in a rush to get married and always give your partner the freedom and support to achieve their ambitions.
She continued to my favorite line.
Treat people just like people.
She explains how she learned this:
“A long time ago an actress friend of mine did the simplest thing. We were in the backseat of a car being driven to a location…in those prehistoric days when you could smoke in the car… and before she lit up, she offered the driver one (a cigarette)… to her he wasn´t a driver person but a person person . A person person who might want to smoke.”
Remember that every single person whether they have dominion over your life or not deserves equal respect and generousity.”
She talks about appearance:
Ignore anyone who judges the way you look… especially if he is a creep lurking on the internet.
When talking about her headmistress from her childhood school, she talks about fear:
Don´t be afraid of fear or don´t let fear rule you.”
In terms of daily living, she gives a wonderful list:
Don´t overcomplicate things.
Don´t procrastinate.
Do say thank you when it is merited.
Don´t lose you sense of humor.
Do confront bullies.
Do open your heart to love.
Don´t confuse sex with love.
Don´t smoke tobacco or chew it.
Don´t dive into water when you don´t know how deep it is.
And one more thing…
… listen to your instinct, grab the opportunity when it presents itself and then give it your all.
