I went to the Producers Market this morning. It´s filled with people, picnic tables filled with huge pots of soups and rice, and giant clumps of plantains all over the floor. The market is a stopping point for boats travelling up the River Itaya, with people and goods coming from their communities to sell.
I started talking with a woman named Reyna about a mushroom-based coffee substitute she was selling. I asked about her family (five children). She explained how her health had been transformed in nearly every way by this mushroom. After 10 minutes into our conversation, she offered me the only small stool in her stall, introduced me to her husband, and made me feel as though all the time in the world belonged to us. I paused. This person, willing to chat with a stranger, with time to spare, and sharing her small space without thinking twice.
"In what model of productivity would this kind of interation be considered a priority?"
My answer: a model that emphasizes doing important things and not just efficient things.
Boats on the River Itaya
Fui al Mercado de Productores esta mañana. Está lleno de gente, mesas de picnic llenas de enormes ollas de sopa y arroz, y gigantescos grupos de plátanos por todo el suelo. El mercado es un punto de parada para los barcos que viajan por el río Itaya, con gente y mercancías que vienen de sus comunidades para vender.
Empecé a hablar con una mujer llamada Reyna sobre un sustituto de café a base de hongos que estaba vendiendo. Pregunté por su familia (cinco hijos). Me explicó que su salud se había transformado en casi todos los sentidos por este hongo. Después de 10 minutos de conversación, me ofreció el único taburete pequeño de su puesto, me presentó a su marido y me hizo sentir como si todo el tiempo del mundo nos perteneciera. Hice una pausa. Esta persona, dispuesta a charlar con una extraña, con tiempo libre, y compartiendo su pequeño espacio sin pensarlo dos veces.
"¿En qué modelo de productividad se consideraría prioritaria esta clase de interacción?"
Mi respuesta: un modelo que enfatiza hacer cosas importantes y no sólo cosas eficientes.
