Perhaps what makes conversations about race and social change hard for white people is the changing of a previous status. It´s hard for me, at times, too. Before, being a white person in the US meant having exclusive power. That´s slowly changing, and it needs to continue to change.

It’s also true that for some white people, the only power they feel in their lives comes from being white. Conversations are now taking place about white privilege and white supremacy. And that sense of power and privilege has the scary sense of being taken away. Some are holding on because it´s a bedrock of something known before and what they grew up with. Also, it requires developing a new identity where you´re not the only one in charge. But there is new meaning and purpose to be found.

When a system is systemically unjust, changes need to be made. Privilege based on race isn´t fair, and the consequences are brutal. And that slow and painful accepance is what is to come. That said, in this future, everyone (not just one group) wins.

Tal vez lo que hace que las conversaciones sobre la raza y el cambio social sean difíciles para los blancos y blancas es el cambio de un estatus previo. Es difícil para mí, a veces, también. Antes, ser una persona blanca en los EE.UU. significaba tener el poder exclusivo. Eso está cambiando lentamente, y tiene que seguir cambiando.

Cuando un sistema es sistémicamente injusto, hay que hacer cambios. Los privilegios basados en la raza no son justos, y las consecuencias son brutales. Y esa lenta y dolorosa aceptación es lo que está por venir. Dicho esto, en este futuro, todos (no sólo un grupo) ganan.
