Last week, I cleaned up a flood in my office. In my wrap dress, I used measuring cup after measuring cup to pull water off the floor. I emptied several large buckets into the shower.

I called the landlord.

Iquitos doesn’t do much lightly, least of all, rain. I assumed a crack in the ceiling was the problem. It has been before.

It wasn’t. The water didn’t come through the windows this time, either. It came from the most invisible leak in the bathroom. The spray was hardly noticeable, but after a couple of weeks, the apartment was filled.

I said aloud, “this is what people mean when they say “drop by drop”. It means there were buckets of water on the floor without noticing how.

May I remember that lesson, me who has previously favored buckets to sprays.

La semana pasada, limpié una inundación en mi oficina. Con mi vestido de abrigo, utilicé un vaso medidor despues de vaso medidor para sacar el agua del suelo. Acabé vaciando varios cubos grandes de agua en la ducha.

Llamé al dueño de la casa.

En Iquitos no llueve mucho a la ligera, y mucho menos. Supuse que el problema era una grieta en el techo.

Resultó que no lo era. Esta vez el agua no entró por las ventanas. Venía de la fuga más invisible del baño. El chorro apenas se notaba, pero al cabo de un par de semanas, el apartamento estaba lleno.

Me dije en voz alta: "esto es lo que realmente quiere decir la gente cuando dice "gota a gota". Significa que había cubos de agua en el suelo sin que nadie se diera cuenta de cómo.

Que recuerde esa lección, yo que antes prefería los baldes a los rociadores.
