Iquiteñan people have a flexible concept of time. Time isn´t what we thought. It doesn’t end, and it’s never in short supply. Aside from the immense challenge in scheduling something, we are reminded there’s always more inside the box, to quote Steven Pressfield. There is more inside each time packet even when itis not accounted for. This has been one of my greatest lessons living where I live.

Today I spent a couple of hours cooking with my friend and her son in my kitchen. It happened because I had already decided previously I wouldn’t make extra plans. When the option became available, there I was, with food to share and time to share it. We made chicken in my pressure cooker. Her son helped me make chocolate pudding.

What else to have done with that afternoon? What else is there time for? What else would have brought about so much connection and intimacy that came about with no planning?

This has an enormous amount to teach me.

Los iquiteños tienen un concepto flexible del tiempo. El tiempo no es lo que pensamos. No se acaba, y nunca escasea. Aparte del inmenso reto que supone programar algo, se nos recuerda que siempre hay más dentro de la caja, citando a Steven Pressfield. Hay más dentro de cada paquete de tiempo, incluso cuando no se tiene en cuenta. Esta ha sido una de mis mayores lecciones viviendo donde vivo.

Hoy he pasado un par de horas cocinando con mi amiga y su hijo en mi cocina. Sucedió porque ya había decidido previamente que no haría planes extra. Cuando se presentó la opción, ahí estaba yo, con comida para compartir y tiempo para compartirla. Hicimos pollo en mi olla a presión. Su hijo me ayudó a hacer pudín de chocolate.

¿Qué más se puede hacer con esa tarde? ¿Para qué más hay tiempo? ¿Qué otra cosa habría propiciado tanta conexión e intimidad que surgió sin ninguna planificación?

Esto tiene mucho que enseñarme.
