If you think that said moral battle is only taking place between you and one ugly villain, you are mistaken.
You have forgotten to consider absolutely everyone else in the room and a system that finds cognitive relief in the status quo… for good reason too. You have forgotten how choices are made in a system. You couldn’t change one outdated fax machine in your old clinic as you’d have to replace all of them with the grey cables connecting them. It’s like picking up a stone on the ground and finding a stringy web tying it to every other stone. If there was only one villain conveniently needing defeat, it would be too Saturday-morning cartoon. This is real life, after all. Welcome back.
It would be too much like Bridgerton, a series where one romantic look means people will never be able to live apart. We deserve narratives that serve our regular lives better. But I digress.
This world is filled with people and objects tied to other people and other objects. It’s filled with humans, just like me, vying to improve our social status. That might be the most salient strategic principle of them all. No one wants to lower their social status. We will do much to avoid losing new ground.
Instead of calling in palliative care for a system we preemptively got doomsday about, let’s be more strategic in our thinking instead of leaning into fear or laziness.
There’s a lot to do and it’s not about villains. It’s about systems.

Has olvidado tener en cuenta a absolutamente todos los demás en la sala y a un sistema que encuentra alivio cognitivo en el statu quo... por una buena razón también. Has olvidado cómo se toman las decisiones en un sistema. No podrías cambiar una sola máquina de fax anticuada en tu antigua clínica, ya que tendrías que cambiarlas todas junto con los cables grises que las conectan. Es como coger una piedra del suelo y encontrar una telaraña que la ata a todas las demás piedras. Si sólo hubiera que derrotar a un villano, sería demasiado de dibujos animados de sábado por la mañana. Esto es la vida real, después de todo. Bienvenido de nuevo.
Sería demasiado parecido a Bridgerton, una serie en la que una mirada romántica significa que la gente nunca podrá vivir separada. Nos merecemos narrativas que sirvan mejor a nuestras vidas normales. Pero divago.
Este mundo está lleno de personas y objetos atados a otras personas y otros objetos. Está lleno de humanos, como yo, que compiten por mejorar su estatus social. Ese podría ser el principio estratégico más destacado de todos. Nadie quiere rebajar su estatus social. Haremos mucho por evitar perder terreno.
En lugar de recurrir a los cuidados paliativos para un sistema sobre el que nos hemos puesto preventivamente catastrofistas, seamos más estratégicos en nuestra forma de pensar en lugar de inclinarnos por el miedo o la pereza.
Hay mucho que hacer y no se trata de villanos. Se trata de sistemas.
