Maybe I am simply getting older.
…but it seems that dealing with humans, especially in old broken social systems, is something people avoid. I get it. It requires tedious, long work. It takes way more time than you want. It is not as sexy as emergencies or diasters.
I am very new working in Iquitos, and It seems that the best work I can do is build up health systems. Making the baseline, bread and butter care, better. Into what is deserved.
It would be easier to just tell people what they need. To be dictatorial… and then find that people don´t trust you. You would not trust you in this context.
I do not care if people find this idealistic. They are welcome to have that opinion But my interest in the opinions of people who have never tried (especially using new methods) is of no interest.
That is worth writing down.
I also love that true public health is completely aimed towards improving a shared human experience. One based on care, on community, and on the practical platform that we do better when we stick our neck out to build better systems for each other.
