The wifi in Iquitos is so bad, it´s hard to believe at times. The particularly annoying part is it does actually work at times giving the expectation that certain activities are occassionally possible.

I tried uploading some documents yesterday which didn´t work. I tried getting in the e-line to speak with someone, and I was placed at number 50.

I waited for 30 minutes, and I wasn´t able to talk to anyone. I got out of the line and got up at 6:30am the next morning to try again.

It’s one of those same amount of time, different time-of-day situations that can make all the difference. In the morning, the documents didn´t not upload once again due to some impermeable problem, but I was number 1 in line to get help. After two more attempts, I sent the documents to someone else.

This boring and painful story shows why sunk costs are hard. You already invested an amount of time and energy, and you don´t want to feel it was wasted.

But when it´s not working? When it´s already partially or competely? What´s harder is stopping and letting go. I had to pull out a crowbar, pry myself off, and move on.

El wifi en Iquitos es tan malo que a veces es difícil de creer. Lo más molesto es que a veces sí funciona, dando la impresión de que ciertas actividades son posibles.

Ayer intenté subir unos documentos y no funcionó. Intenté entrar en la línea electrónica para hablar con alguien, y me pusieron en el número 50.

Esperé 30 minutos y no pude hablar con nadie. Salí de la línea y me levanté a las 6:30 de la mañana del día siguiente para volver a intentarlo.

Es una de esas situaciones en las que la misma cantidad de tiempo y la diferente hora del día pueden marcar la diferencia. Por la mañana, los documentos no se cargaron una vez más debido a algún problema impermeable, pero yo era el número 1 en la cola para obtener ayuda. Tras dos intentos más, envié los documentos a otra persona.

Esta aburrida y dolorosa historia muestra por qué los costes hundidos son difíciles. Ya has invertido una cantidad de tiempo y energía, y no quieres sentir que se ha desperdiciado.

¿Pero cuando no funciona? ¿Cuando ya está parcial o competentemente? Lo que es más difícil es parar y dejar ir. Tuve que sacar una palanca, hacer palanca y seguir adelante.
