I was pouring beer for some friends not too long ago. I filled each person’s glass fully. My friend, from Peru, took a turn pouring beer from the same shared bottle. She poured small amounts into each glass and refilled them over and over again. There was something about my strategy that felt very USA.
In the US, each person gets their full, individual beer glass to start. In Peru, each person smarts with a smaller amount and we go through the bottle together, round after round. I found this to be a wonderful example of individualistic versus collective cultural orientation taken sip by sip.

Hace poco serví cerveza a unas amigas. Llené el vaso de cada uno. Mi amiga, de Perú, se turnó para servir cerveza de la misma botella compartida. Sirvió pequeñas cantidades en cada vaso y los rellenó una y otra vez. Había algo en mi estrategia que me parecía muy estadounidense.
En Estados Unidos, cada persona tiene su vaso de cerveza individual lleno para empezar. En Perú, cada persona empieza con una cantidad más pequeña y vamos pasando la botella juntos, ronda tras ronda. Me pareció un ejemplo maravilloso de la orientación cultural individualista frente a la colectiva, tomada sorbo a sorbo.
